J. Mark Dunning was born in Dothan, AL, and founded Mark Dunning Industries (MDI) in 1980 while still in college at the University of Alabama./Operating out of his home, and performing many jobs himself, he quickly developed a sense of “What it Takes” to succeed in a highly competitive Government Services market. His “What it Takes” outlook on business has thrived on dedication to customer service and complete customer satisfaction. Over the years, he has established MDI as a top tier player in the Solid Waste Industry. As President, Mark guides the company to maintain its focus and provide strategic direction for the future.

Brad W. Dunning, son of President J. Mark Dunning, is originally from Dothan, AL, and has been employed with MDI since 2006. He is a 2005 graduate of the University of Alabama College of Commerce and Business Administration.

Trey Michael is a licensed CPA with over 13 years of expertise in accounting and financial operations. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and subsequent Master’s in Tax Accounting from the University of Alabama.

With a commitment to excellence and a strategic mindset, Trey has successfully navigated the complexities of financial management, contributing to the success and growth of the organizations he has been a part of. As a forward-thinking professional, Trey brings a unique blend of financial acumen, information technology, and a results-driven approach to financial leadership.

Felecia Starr Bowman (Starr) was born in Heidelberg, Germany. She joined Mark Dunning Industries in 1993 at the Corporate Office in Dothan, Alabama, where she managed several county and municipal contracts for residential and commercial refuse collection. In 2003 Starr accepted the title of MDI’s Safety Director. Her expertise includes Landfill Diversion and Recycling, operations management, fleet maintenance, DOT regulations, and Safety Protocol, where she has earned Mark Dunning.

John Foley

General Manager

John Foley brings more than three decades of expertise in the solid waste industry, having begun his career on the front lines as a front load driver. Over the course of his career, he moved up the ranks to Supervisor, Safety Manager, Operations Manager, General Manager and, ultimately, Site Manager. He has more than 32 years of experience in the hauling and landfill industry.

IN MEMORY OF OUR COLLEAGUE AND FRIEND
Our longtime colleague of over 13 years, Phillip Makowski (Phil), passed away in June of 2010 after a 3 year battle with ALS. Phil was born in San Marcos, TX, and was raised in Ozark, AL. Phil was a Veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard and a graduate of the University of Alabama.

He joined MDI in 1997 as Corporate Controller and handled most of the day to day management operations. MDI will forever be indebted to Phil’s hard work, courage, and determination, to make MDI one of the best in the business.

Roy H. Phillips

Director of Outside Maintenance

Roy H. Phillips was born in Tampa, FL, and has currently been employed by MDI since 1982, making him the longest tenured employee. He currently manages the Refuse and Recycling contract at Fort Rucker, Alabama, and he also runs the Dothan shop at the home office. His areas of expertise include, Driving Instructor of New Employees, Welding, Painting, Truck and Container Repair, Solid Waste Management, Landfill Diversion and Recycling, Roads and Grounds Maintenance, Lake Fertilization, and Government Contract Management.

Scott is originally from Lineville, AL. He is a graduate of Auburn University (where he taped the ankles of Charles Barkley and Bo Jackson!) and holds a Master’s degree from the University of Georgia. He and his wife Jill have been married over 25 years and have two sons and one grandson.

Scott joined MDI in 2011, bringing over 20 years of sales, marketing, and management experience from the pharmaceutical industry. Scott brings to MDI his passion for creating customer value that exceeds expectation through unsurpassed customer service.

Former longtime employee James Porter started with MDI in February of 1999 through March 2006. James returned to MDI in 2015 as the Project Manager for the STOX Area, NAS Corpus Christi and Kingsville ISWM contract and is now Dothan, AL Operations Manager.

J. David Dunning is the youngest son of President J. Mark Dunning and brother of Brad W. Dunning. David is originally from Dothan, Alabama and has been with MDI since January 2012. David graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in Business Management with a minor in Computer Science in December 2011.

He received his Bachelor of Landscape Architecture in 1976 from the University of Georgia, and he has his Georgia Commercial Pesticide Applicators License in 3 Categories. His current position is the Project Manager at Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base, GA.

Nikki is originally from Cleveland, Ohio and has resided on the MS Gulf Coast since 1993. Nikki joined MDI in 2023 as Commercial Manager for MDI Gulf Coast Area bringing with her over 17 years of experience and knowledge in the garbage industry ( customer service, sales, senior level operations and route management, commercial and industrial) Nikki has a passion for helping customers with a strong emphasis on maintaining relationships with customers as well as her frontline team building trust and delivering exceptional service resulting in rapid growth in this market.

Johnny Rodriguez

Johnny is from Corpus Christi, TX where he spent several years working for the City of Corpus Christi’s Waste Water Department before changing careers and entering the waste hauling industry. He joined MDI in 2015 bringing with him over 17 years of experience and knowledge as a driver (front, side, roll-off and brush) trainer and route coordinator. He is currently the Project Manager of the South Texas area which includes NAS Corpus Christi and Kingsville.

Audwin Goldsmith, originally from Brooklyn, NY, relocated to Virginia in the 90’s. He boasts an impressive background in the Waste/Refuse management industry, where he has dedicated more than a decade of his professional career.

Having joined MDI as a driver in 2019, Audwin’s dedication and expertise quickly earned him a significant promotion. In 2022, he was appointed as the project manager for the Ft. Gregg-Adams/ Virginia location. His extensive knowledge of all refuse vehicles, acquired during his prior tenure, has been invaluable to MDI operations. Audwin not only brings experience to the table, but also a wealth of expertise in waste management industry operations.
